Boston Researchers Discover New Source Of Heart Stem Cells

Researchers in Massachusetts have pinpointed previously unrecognized stem cells that give rise to cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells.

The cells, located in the surface of the heart, advance the hope of being able to regenerate injured heart tissue.

The work was performed by scientists William Pu, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s and the study’s senior investigator, and Bin Zhou, M.D., a research fellow in Pu’s laboratory and the study’s first author, at the Children’s Hospital Boston.
